Huey Newton

Sep 25, 12:17 PM

Huey Percy Newton (February 17, 1942 – August 22, 1989), was co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, an African-American organization established to promote Black Power, civil rights and self-defense.
Newton was accused of murdering Oakland police officer John Frey, before dawn on October 28, 1967. Newton was convicted in September 1968 of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 2–15 years in prison. In May 1970, the California Appellate Court reversed the conviction and ordered a new trial. After two subsequent mistrials, the State of California dropped the case.

OK, so Huey doesn’t quite qualify for the ‘criminals’ tag. I’ll have to go with my default joke of “What’s more mormon than an angry black man?”.

  1. Didn’t Eldridge Cleaver actually join up? You know, after he had lost his mind and become a Republican.

  2. Huey Newton is not a Mormon. Neither is Cleaver. I think it’s wrong to connect either of these men with any church. You’ll only give those religions bad names.

  3. Huey Newton’s legacy will continue to live on as a man who fought against racist views and police brutality. The constant negative posts about this man, will further encourage people who are of God to fight against the forces that have left the relms of humanity.

  4. While peace was always on my mind in those days…the militant side of things were a necessary action to provoke the population into understanding what things could become if change were too far off – James
