Horatio Alger

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author whose principal output was formulaic juvenile novels that followed the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children in their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. His novels were hugely popular in their day.

I’m sure that Horatio never intended to be the epitome of his own stories of rags to riches success, but how can you argue with his story. Born the son of a Unitarian minister, he also became a minister until he was accused of pederasty with two boys in his parish. But in spite of this, with his multiple baptisms and endowments into the mormon church he is well on his way to becoming a god of his own world. Talk about your rags to riches story.
