Candy Barr (July 6, 1935 – December 30, 2005) was an American stripper, burlesque exotic dancer, actress in one pornographic movie, and model in men’s magazines of the mid-20th century.

Born Juanita Dale Slusher in Edna, Texas, the youngest of five children, at age 16, she appeared in one of the first pornographic movies, Smart Alec (1951). Later, Barr established herself in burlesque and striptease with her trademark costume—cowboy hat, pasties, scant panties, a pair of pearl handled cap six-shooters in a holster strapped low on her shapely hips, and cowboy boots. Married three times, and widowed once when she shot her second husband, she was also involved with Jack Ruby and Mickey Cohen. Later in her life, she was honored by Texas Monthly as one history’s “perfect Texans”, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Exotic World Burlesque Museum.

We hadn’t intended to feature any more strippers, but found that we have a sweet tooth and cannot resist Candy.

Charles Taze Russell (February 16, 1852 – October 31, 1916), or Pastor Russell, was a prominent early 20th century Christian Restorationist minister from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA and founder of what is now known as the Bible Student movement, from which Jehovah’s Witnesses and numerous independent Bible Student groups emerged.

It seems that Pastor Russell might be relieved to be baptized a mormon, since the 4 or 5 times he predicted the second coming of Christ never came to pass. He would certainly be more secure in his salvation now that he has been baptized twice by mormons, seeking to rescue his soul.

Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American expatriate singer, dancer and actress, who had performed as a chorus girl on Broadway and toured the United States before she traveled to Paris to open her show La Revue Nègre .

The show gained notoriety for Baker’s erotic, near nude dancing. She performed her captivating Danse Sauvage dressed in nothing but a feather skirt and the most iconic image of Baker, naked but for a skirt made from bananas comes from this act.

In 1937, Baker became a French citizen. She assisted with the French World War Two effort by corresponding with the French Resistance, serving as a sub-lieutenant in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and performing for the troops.
For Josephine Baker stripping opened the door to wealth, fame, opportunity and respect.

Singer, dancer, actress, spy, civil rights activist. But her life was really meaningless until she became a mormon.

Gypsy Rose Lee (January 8, 1911 – April 26, 1970) was an American burlesque entertainer, famous for her striptease act. She was also an actress, author and playwright, whose 1957 memoir was made into the stage musical and film Gypsy.

It seems that there are people in the mormon church who think it’s important to save strippers. Earlier this year, someone saved Lili St. Cyr, and now we find that Gypsy Rose Lee was saved way back in 1992. Thank goodness someone is on the ball, saving strippers.

Lili St. Cyr (born Willis Marie Van Schaack, June 3, 1918 – January 29, 1999), was a prominent American burlesque stripper. From the 1940s and most of the 1950s, St. Cyr with Gypsy Rose Lee and Ann Corio were the recognized acts in striptease. St. Cyr’s stage name is a patronymic of the French aristocracy, which she first used when booked as a nude performer in Las Vegas.

Thank you, silly mormons. I’ve been waiting for a year to feature a famous stripper. I’ve always wanted to write up Lili, but no one had ever completed her saving ordinances. But now, she is safely ensconced in the loving arms of mormonism, and she can be a nude inspiration for all eternity.
